He is one of the most important figures in the history of Slovak tourism. A charismatic activist and mountain enthusiast who for years actively developed and promoted tourism in Orava and the Western Tatras.
Ťatliak was responsible for expanding tourist infrastructure, marking trails, and organizing numerous mountain events.
In 1937, construction began on a mountain hut at the foot of the Roháče peaks, and in 1941 Ťatliak’s Hut was opened. It quickly became one of the key starting points for routes to the Roháč Lakes, Wołowiec, and Trzy Kopy.
During World War II, the hut also served as a safe shelter for Jewish families and partisans in hiding.
Although the first and second huts have not survived to this day, the memory of Ťatliak remains very much alive.
Today, Ťatliakova Chata – the Roháč Buffet – operates on this site, and a nearby plaque commemorates the man who dedicated his heart to the mountains and helped make the Roháč Valley one of the most remarkable tourist regions in Slovakia.
Thanks to Ján Ťatliak, Orava and the Roháče Mountains became a place to which thousands of tourists and runners return every year.

The route leads through the wild, breathtaking landscapes of Orava, a region that for centuries has connected people on both sides of the Tatras. Here, where the paths of neighbors meet, the spirit of cooperation and mountain camaraderie has thrived for generations.

Ticket cost: 60 PLN, payable during registration or in cash at the race office.
Buses depart at 4:00 AM from the parking lot at Siwa Polana next to the race office.
